There are less and less places in this world, which are not totally commercialized, so finding one is always rewarding.
Croatia might not be on everyone’s radars, but due to its amazing coast and numerous islands, it definitely becomes more and more popular and visited by travelers from all around the world.
Nevertheless, Croatia still has many places and regions, which are almost intact. One of them is also Slavonia.
Best things to do in Slavonia
- Visit Đakovo and its famous cathedral
The city of Đakovo is known as the heart of Slavonia and many visitors are amazed by its cathedral. The so called Strossmayer Cathedral (officially known as St. Peter’s basilica) was built out of 7 million bricks. The pope, John XXIII, named it as the most beautiful church between Venice and Istanbul.
- Admire the Lipizzaner horses
The Lipizzaner horses originated in Slovenia, but in 1806 Austrians moved the horses from Lipica (stables in Slovenia) to Đakovo due to Napoleon. Now the Lipizzaners can be seen in Slovenia, Croatia and even in Austria.
- Explore Vukovar and its surroundings
The city is unfortunately known mostly from its war times in 1991. Visiting the Ovčara concentration camp will not leave you indifferent.
- Get to know the history
If you are into history, you will find the Vučedol museum extremely interesting.
- Be reminded of the war times
Stop at the water tower in Vukovar– symbol of suffering.
- Relax by the Donau River
Order lunch in a local restaurant at Vukovar river harbor and observe the traffic on the Donau River.
- Wonder around Osijek
Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia and is known as the greenest city in the country. Don’t forget to try the local beer – Osječko, with some specialties from the grill.
- Get to know the local feel and visit the market
One of the nicest markets to visit can be found in Osijek and the best time to wander around is in autumn, as the stands are full of local products.
- Take the boat ride at the national park Kopački rit
You will find extremely reach animal world at Kopački rit, so don’t miss this unique place.
- Visit a local festival »Ribarski dani« (Fishing festival)
One of the best times to visit Slavonia is in the middle of September, when the local fish festival is held at a small village of Kopačevo. You won’t find here only stands with local products, but you will be able to taste the real local cuisine as well. Don’t miss trying the »fiš paprikaš« (some sort of fish stew, made out of 2-3 sort of fish – carp, sheatfish, pike),»šarani u rašljama« (carps grilled on a stick) and »čobanac« (local goulash made out of at least 2 types of meat)
Slavonia is very different from the rest of Croatia and if you are still looking for authentic feel, you should definitely put Slavonia on your bucket list. It might not charm you if you are in search of trendy places, but if you are looking for tradition and local feel you definitely won’t be disappointed.
Hotel recommendation: You won’t miss staying in a hotel Pansion Strossmayer in Osijek. The location is in the city center, so everything is just steps away. The hotel Pansion Strossmayer has its own private and guarded parking. The staff is super nice and helpful and also its breakfast is good.
Renting a car: To really get to know Slavonia, your best option is renting a car. Whenever we rent a car, we book it at www.economycarrentals.com and so far we were always happy with the price and service.
