Italy is a big hit among travelers and we are guessing traditional Italian food plays a huge roll in this. You don’t need to be a foodie to know, it can hardly get any better than traveling around a country which offers good food and wine.
Most people know Italian food for its pasta, but Italy offers so much more to everyone willing to try. The best part of traveling around Italy is that every region has its own traditional food and unique characteristics.
The region Friuli Venezia Giulia is the smallest Italian region, but yet rich in taste due to its location.
Many Italians describe Friuli Venezia Giulia as a non Italian area because of its foreing influence on food and daily life. Nevertheless, you will not be able to avoid pasta here. It is up to you, what kind of pasta you will choose from as the choice is wide (meat, seafood, veggies). Whatever you decide to try, you will not go wrong!
Whenever you are traveling around Friuli Venezia Giulia region, do not miss its famous San Daniele prosciutto. If you like cheese, you will also love this area. Go for Montasio and Asino – traditional north-east Italian cheeses. A traditional corn bread »Pan Di Sorc« goes fantastic with them too.
Not all like cheeses and rather taste meat and in this case salamis. If that goes true for you too, you must try a specialty for Friuli Venezia Giulia region »Pitina«. Pitina is a small ball, made out of sheep, goat or mixed meat and covered with corn flower. It can be eaten fresh, in a cooked sauce like a meat ball, or you can leave it to dry to become a salami. It is delicious and we loved it!
When you think you are already full, it is time for a desert or two. Our suggestion in this case – you should avoid being on a diet, when traveling to Italy or you will regret it for sure.
Italian culinary culture is amazing and you owe it to take time for it and enjoy it. Start with »aperitivo« and try their prosciutto, cheeses and a glass of Prossecco. Continue with a variety of pasta, dessert and a coffee at the end. When choosing a coffee, make sure to drink espresso and not even thing about Latte macchiato or cappuccino, as all long coffees with milk should be enjoyed at breakfast only. Last but not least – enjoy your »dolce vita« when traveling around Italy.
Recommendation to all foodies:
- Restaurant La Torre in Spilimbergo – a small restaurant, which can be found in once a magnificent mansion. The restaurants’ interior will take you back in time, but its food will serve you the future.
- Restaurant Al Belvedere – a family run restaurant, which bets on homemade food, using as much things as possible from its own garden. The restaurant is a part of a hotel with an outdoor swimming pool. Perfect for the summer!
- Homestead / agrotourism Casa Rossa Ai Colli – A perfect example of top notch agrotourism. Local and homemade food is served on a modern style. Its great location offers splendid views over the hilly area of Friuli Venezia Giulia region. If you are looking for a local tradition in style, you will love the fact they also offer rooms.
