Have you ever though of surfing in the Philippines? The country is famous for its sandy beaches, crystal clear water and its many coral reefs. Not many know though, that the Philippines are good for surfing too.
Surfing in the Philippines – the cheapest in the world
In the North-west of Luzon island lies La Union, a coastal Filipino province, which offers continuous waves, what makes it a great surfing spot. The best time for surfing in the Philippines is from November to March, what in general is the best time to travel to Philippines. The Philippines are perfect for a winter get-away, even more if you are a surfer. La Union is known as the cheapest surfing spot in the Philippines and also around the whole world.
The area where surfers gather is called Urbitzondo and it is the best place for surfing in the Philippines – at least from the money perspective. I spent almost a week in a small town of San Juan, where some relaxed travel-surf style accommodations can be found. Majority of the accommodations is run by foreigners and are in a pretty bad shape, from which you can easily see, not much was done towards maintaining them. Honestly, they don’t offer much for the paid price, but the vibe is right for surfing. On the other hand San Juan has some cool beach like restaurants with amazing and ridiculously cheap sea food. If you come surfing in the Philippines, good food, good vibe and great waves is all you need anyway.
The views towards the waves mark clearly that surfing in the Philippines is a daily routine. Children with the age of 7 and 8 are riding the waves instead of playing hide and seek. They are so good in surfing that we can easily say they were born with a surf board.
San Juan was a nice escape from the most famous tourist attractions in the Philippines, where foreign visitors are more or less exception than a rule. Cheap surfing lessons are just a bonus and with that, there is no surprise that surfing in the Philippines attracts more and more people.
