Best things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber will easily convince you, a visit to Rothenburg is well worth your time when traveling around Germany.

Even though 45% of Rothenburg was destroyed during the WW2, the town was completely rebuild and it is now known as one of the best preserved medieval town in Germany and now offers many things to do and see.

I wanted to visit Rothenburg for ages, so when the right time came, I grab my opportunity and I liked it even more than I hopped for. I actually felt sorry we only had one day in Rothenburg.

Take a walk at the old town walls

One of the best things to do in Rothenburg is for sure walking on the old town walls. This defensive walls have been surrounding Rothenburg completely. You can still take a walk on it and the whole path is 4 kilometers long, offering great and picturesque views over the old town. You can also find several informative boards along the way.

Walk around its colorful narrow streets

Nothing can bit the charm of picturesque streets which make a town interesting and beautiful for itself. Even though you don’t plan to tick off our list of best things to do in Rothenburg, you will already be rewarded with just walking around the town.

Admire Christmas village Käthe Wohlfart

Tradition of Christmas markets began in Germany and we can see a big influence in Rothenburg too. If you enjoy Christmas, one of the best things to do in Rothenburg is a visit to the Christmas village – a Christmas decoration store, which Christmas decorations are well know all around the world – including nut-crackers. Just seeing the big Christmas tree, decorated with 1400 glass ornaments and 12.000 lights is worth a walk through. If you want to find more about Christmas tradition and history of ornaments, make sure to visit the Christmas museum opposite the store too.

Taste the snowballs (Schneeballen)

Snowballs are one of the must things to try when in Rothenburg. You can find them on every corner, but for the best and certified ones, you will have to visit cafe-bakery Walter Friedel. Go for the most traditional ones – powder sugar coated or cinnamon coated, as they represent the dessert best. But you can also get them in several different tastes now.

Climb the town hall tower

If the weather suits you well, a climb up the town hall tower will do the trick. Seeing Rothenburg from above, its narrow old streets and red roof tiles, is icing on the cake of the complete tour of the town. But just a reminder, there are 220 steps to overcome before enjoying the views.

Get to know the history in its museums

We can find several museums in Rothenburg, but one of the most interesting is for sure the medieval crime and justice museum, which is the only law museum in Europe.

Enjoy a good cup of coffee

We have seen some really cute cafes in the old town, where good coffee is served. If you enjoy trendy and hip places Cafe Einzigartig and Cafe Lebenslust are the two places worth stopping at.

Relax at the Burggarten

If you’ll be traveling to Rothenburg with kids, you should definitely make a stop at the Burggarten Park. Unfortunately the old town has no playgrounds or kids areas, so the Burggarten is your only choice, where kids will be able to spend their extra energy. You can even have a picnic there or just pack a ball to play with there. If you are not visiting Rothenburg with kids, Burggarten is still a nice place to have different kind of views over the town walls.

Take part of the night watchman tour

Rothenburg also offers a really cool and unique city tour, where your guide will be the night watchman. The tour starts 8pm and will for sure be a nice and one of a little bit different things to do in Rothenburg.

Hotel recommendation: We stayed only few steps from the old town and the town walls. Hotel Alterego was amazing and one of a kind for sure. The old city house is now a boutique hotel. The hotel’s front desk is in a building next door, so the ground floor is actually a big living and dining room, with refrigerators you can use for your own food and beverages. There is even still and sparking water, coffee and tea available for free. Hotel Alterego has a big private parking and free WI-FI too. Breakfast is not included though, but if you will pay extra for it, you will not be sorry, as it is really rich, diverse and tasty.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber lies at the German romantic road, which many visit with their  campervans. You will find some park and drive spots on the outskirt of the city and also 2 camping spots, which are just 5-10 minutes by foot from the old town center.

Things to do in Rothenburg are not just the magical half-timbered houses and cobbled streets, but the complete vibe this picturesque and magical town has to offer. In fact, Rothenburg does look so magical that even some scenes from Harry Potter movie were shot there. Harry Potter fan or not, if you are visiting Germany and plan to travel along the Romantic road, you should definitely put Rothenburg high on your German travel bucket list.
