Rheingau in Germany is such a wonderful destination, we knew, we have to put it on our roadtrip travel itinerary around Belgium, Holland and Germany. Our last part of the roadtrip was the romantic town Rüdesheim and its surroundings of the Germany region Rheingau.

We are still asking ourselves why Rheingau charmed us so much – was it for the sunny summer days, which we missed in Holland, or was it for the numerous picturesque sights. One thing is certain – Rheingau is amazingly beautiful!

Rheingau Germany – best things to do and see

Abtei St. Hildegard

The monastery was closed at the time we visited it, but just the sight of it was already stunning. The enormous brick building in the middle of the vineyards is a sight hard to forget. The monastery is in fact nun’s monastery of the Benedictine’s order. The impressive fact about it is that the nuns are extremely good in wine production.

Johannisberg Castle

Rheingau is all about the wine. Also the Johannisberg Castle is one of the best know places for it – it is set in the middle of the vineyards, it has its own vine production and also a nice wine cellar can be found there. The wine has been producing for more than 900 years here. Being here during lunch hours, you might want to have it in its restaurant, offering superb views.

Vollrads Castle

Unfortunately we were not able to see the Vollrads Castle from the inside, as it was closed due to a yearly music festival. Nevertheless, the views across its vineyards showed us another pearl in Rheingau.

Eberbach Monastery

The Eberbach Monastery was once one of the most active and biggest monasteries in Germany. Believe it or not, but also this monastery is known for its wine production. The look from the inside reveals beautifully restored grape presses and historical wine cellar.

The Eltville town

If you are looking for small, but charming town along the river Rhine, make sure to stop at Eltville. There are some nice looking half-timbered houses in the old town center, but more importantly, you will find vibrant feel along the Rhine. Seeing locals hanging out with a glass of wine on a sunny day is nothing unusual.
