We are often exploring Ljubljana Marshes – not only because we live on the edge of it, but also because it always serves us with outstanding nature and wilderness.
Sometimes we explore Ljubljana Marshes by car, on foot, by bike or we observe it while kayaking along Ljubljanica River, which runs through Ljubljana Marshes and passes the city of Ljubljana.
Even though we are locals and we live near Ljubljana (capital of Slovenia), it is fascinating how we always manage to discover something new, which we want to share with the rest of the world. With the help of Ljubljana tourism board, Visit Ljubljana, we were introduced to Trnulja, organic country estate at the outskirts of Ljubljana.
Ljubljana is the European Green capital 2016 and that is why our organized press tour by Visit Ljubljana was all about being ecological, green and sustainable. Everything started with a Segway city tour and later on we were embarked on a beautiful boat, which floats on Ljubljanica River. The boat took us from Ljubljana’s old town to the organic farm Trnulja. Even we had cold and cloudy weather the trip was enjoyable and fun. It was extremely interesting to see how nature is changing in front of our eyes. We needed only 20 minutes by boat from the capital and we were in the middle of wild and vivid green nature.
We reached a small pier, where Urša and Miha, the owners of the organic farm Trnulja, already waited for us. We were greeted with homemade wine liquor and outdoor fire. It started promising indeed.
As soon as we started walking towards the organic country estate Trnulja, we were attracted with its image. Its design, a mixture of old and new, is beautiful! The whole estate joins three different local architectures, which makes everything modern, but still local, including with building materials.
The organic country estate Trnulja is oriented completely in sustainability, so no wonder Trnulja is part of the hotel chain Bio Hotels. In fact, Trnulja is the only hotel in Slovenia, having this title.
Everything that is served in their restaurant is grown on their farm, but the largest influence come from hemp. Why hemp you may ask – everything started in 2004, with growing the very first field of hemp.
Everyone who wants to stay longer at the farm, can book one of their rooms /apartments, which are again designed locally. All their furniture is made out of wood, grown on their estate. The mattresses, towels, blankets and curtains are made out of their hemp as well. Many local craftsmen put their impact with their work here.
The organic estate Trnulja includes large meadows and pastures, where goats and donkeys graze. The owners also offer guided tours around their estate, including their production of cold-pressed oils, made out of hemp seeds, wallnuts, soybean, rapeseed, pumpkin seeds – of course everything is grown on their farm.
A fast growing trend in tourism industry is being involved in all kind of experiences and the owners know this well. They organize cooking workshops for their guests, who want to learn cooking with healthy and local ingredients. The cooking workshops last about 4 hours and can be done in English, German and Slovenian. The good news is that you will also eat everything you cooked at the end.
But don’t think you have to cook if you want to eat. You can indulge yourself with top notch culinary from one of the best Slovenian master chefs Slavko Adamlje. You will get lots of surprises on the menu, including donkey’s salami. The most importantly, everything served on your plates is grown at the farm. Don’t miss prežganka (soup made by roasting and browning hemp flour), hemp gnocchi or pasta and end your meal with a local dessert like Ljubljana’s pancakes (filled with curd cheese and tarragon) or buckwheat štruklji (boiled rolled dumplings).
It is always refreshing to meet someone who is so dedicated to its work. If there was not for Urša and Miha, there would not be for the Organic estate Trnulja with such a high and professional standard. They both put their souls and hearts in what they do. The organic estate Trnulja is their meaning of life, and guest can feel that.
Hearing all their ideas and plans was inspiring. We have no doubt they will soon come a reality. If you put so much of yourself into a project, success is inevitable for sure. So far the organic estate Trnulja is still a well-kept secret, but we are sure it will not stay like this for long… And honestly it shouldn’t. As locals, the Trnulja farm was one of the best discoveries around Ljubljana in years!
