Strunjan, moon bay, hiking path

A trip to the Moon bay in Slovenia and Strunjan cliff was on our agenda for years, but we have finally managed to realize it this autumn. Not only that the circle hiking path offers amazing views towards Piran – the most beautiful coastal town in Slovenia, from it, you can also admire the Trieste bay, Julian Alps with Slovenian highest peak Triglav and with good binocular, you can even spot Miramare castle in Italy.

Tips for visiting Strunjan nature park with its Moon bay and Cliff

Where to start the Moon bay hike?

The easiest way to visit the Strunjan nature park is by car, which you can park on a payable parking place opposite the Villen / Svoboda Hotel in Strunjan. The parking place lies along the Stjuža lagoon (45.531956/13.602954). The cost for the whole day parking is 5 EUR, but you can also pay 0,50 EUR/hour.

Start your hike away from the coast and just follow the signposts, yellow arrows and/or blazes.

How long is the Strunjan nature park hiking path?

The circled path, which takes you around the Strunjan nature park, passing the Moon bay and the cliff, is almost 6 kilometers long. You need to plan around 1,5 hour of easy (kids tempo) hiking for it. Stopping and enjoying all the scenic views, it can of course take you longer too, especially in a nice weather.

Who can do the hiking trail to the Moon bay and beyond?

The path is good for young and old, including small children (from 3 years up). If you have a baby or a toddler, you can also do it with them, but make sure to have a baby / child carrier with you as the path is not good for strollers.

What can you see along the way?

Apart from all the amazing views on Piran, even the sight on the big blue sea is tempting enough. Nothing is better than finding a quiet place, where you can admire the sea, which is upgraded with Julian Alps on a clear blue day.

The main sight along the path is of course the Moon bay and its Strunjan cliff, which is 80 meters high and looks pretty spectacular. There is a wild beach in the bay during the summer months, but with no shade it is good to bring your own.

Along the way also several information boards can be found, which give you more information about the nature park, biodiversity, life, salt pans… Good news is that the information is also written in English and Italian.

Where can you eat?

If you are traveling with small children, make sure to bring your own snack. Well, even if you are older and like to enjoy your snack with a great view, you won’t be sorry to bring one too.

But in general, there is a café Cavedin just steps away from the parking place, where good donuts (krofi) and cakes can be enjoyed.  There is even a nice kid’s playground beside the café. If you are aiming for lunch or dinner, you will find the Pinija restaurant close by too – walking distance to the parking place. We have not eaten there yet, but the online reviews are good.

The hiking path to the Moon bay and Strunjan cliff can be visited all year round. Because each time of the year shows us a different look, it is definitely worth to make a trip there more than once to really enjoy all its beauties.
