We are always surprised how little we know our own country Slovenia. In fact, giving birth to a baby boy in December, made us start exploring it a bit more intense. So far, short day trips are perfect for our little munchkin.

Enjoying the views – sea and snowy mountains at the back – stunning (Izola, Slovenia travel)

We try to avoid winter and harsh temperatures bellow zero in the inland, what always takes us to Slovenian coast. The coast might be short, but it offers some of the most picturesque coastal towns we have visited on our travels.

Not many tourists decide to visit Izola, as they are normally stopping in Portorož and Piran, but if you are looking for a more authentic feel, where majority of people are locals and not tourists (especially off-season), you definitely should put a trip to Izola on your travel bucket list when in Slovenia.

We loved the fact that you can explore it by baby stroller – taking old narrow streets in the old town or a coastal walk. Izola’s marina and views towards the colorful houses in the old town gives you lots of photo opportunities.

A trip to Izola is also perfect escape from the rest of the country in the winter. If you visit Slovenian coast during the sunny weather, you might feel that spring has already arrived, even though the rest of Slovenia has temperatures strongly below zero.

Practical tips for visiting Izola:
  • Parking: You can park at the big parking lot near the shipyard. The parking is payable and it will cost 0,50 EUR/hour or 4 EUR/24 hours. You can also park your RV there – the fee for a 24 hours parking is 15 EUR. (Coordinates: 45.32.19.9 / 13.39.51.9)
  • The coastal walk: Leaving the car at the shipyard parking, walk from »Zustovičeva ulica« to »Tovarniška ulica«, which is slightly mounting up.  When almost reaching the top, turn right to »Ulica ob Pečini«. You will continue your way down towards the coast and turning left when reaching the sea (on the right side is the public dog beach). Turning left you are already on the coastal walk, which leads you all the way to Izola, its marina and even further out.
  • Great for kids: The coastal walk is great also for kids, as there is a nice playground with lots of different equipment, which kids really enjoy.
