If you are a regular reader of our travel blog, you have probably noticed, we are totally in love with traveling with our Toyota Landcruiser. But not long ago, we had the chance to test the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
Well, we would rather test one of their 4×4, but hey, we said to give it a try and see what this so called city car can manage. We were thinking where to go to test Toyota Yaris Hybrid, when the answer popped up – let’s do a roadtrip to Austria – to Lienz town and explore its mountain road up to Grossglockner.
Our roadtrip to Grossglockner was not just special because of the brand new Toyota Yaris Hybrid, but also because we staid the night in one of the best hotels in Austria – The Grand Hotel Lienz. This luxury 5 star hotel was truly amazing for our weekend getaway.
We were hoping for a nice sunny weather, as the views should be amazing, but instead of the sun, we were welcomed with cold and rainy day. Oh well, maybe these weather conditions were even better to put the Toyota Yaris Hybrid truly to the test.
We might have not had the perfect views, but even though the drive up to the windy road was a great fun and unique adventure. If we would have sun, it might already be too perfect.
Practical tips for traveling to Grossglockner
- For driving on the alpine road to Grossglockner, you will need to pay 35€ (car) or 25€ (motorbike).
- If you want to stay overnight in Lienz or its surroundings, there are lots of hotels and guesthouses available for every budget (The guesthouses start at 50€ for a double bed with breakfast – check out the accommodations here). If you really want to spend a real romantic weekend getaway, you can go all the way and stay at the beautiful Grand Hotel Lienz. You won’t be sorry and that’s a promise.
Staying close to nature, you might want to pitch your tent at one of its many camping grounds –we really liked the camping ground at the foothill of a small lake and just 4 kilometers far from Lienz. (Coordinates: 126.96.36.199 / 012.48.10.4)
- Food at Austria’s countryside should always taste good, but if you want to join local food with superb mountain views, you might consider eating at the Dolomitenhuette. The only bad thing about the Dolomitenhuette is payable road to reach it – 8€/car.
- We closed our weekend roadtrip with a coffee in the center of Lienz, which is a really cute town for a short walk around. We even got a bit lucky and had some sunshine before going back home.
Toyota Yaris Hybrid might be a small city car, but nevertheless the whole roadtrip with it was very enjoyable. No matter what kind of a car you owe, you are the only one, who stands on your way… But to be totally honest with you, the best car for our travel style and love for off-road adventures is still our one and only Toyota Landcruiser.
