It is no secret that food in Sri Lanka is spicy. In fact, food in Sri Lanka is very spicy! The most common food in Sri Lanka is delicious curry with rice. You will be able to eat it everywhere and anytime.
If you stay in a local guest house, you will eat curry three times per day; for lunch, dinner and even breakfast. Curry is actually a sauce, which differentiate for its main ingredient (chicken, zucchini, eggplants, tomato, fishβ¦). If you get tired of rice, you can exchange it with rice noodles called string hoppers, which are delicious and definitely a nice break from the rice. Wherever you order curry, you will also get sambola with it. It is a side dish, made out of chili, lime juice, onion and coconut. Adding sambola to already hot curry, makes it super HOT!
Food in Sri Lanka is of course also its fruit. You can find papayas, mangos, bananas, watermelons, pineapples etc. here. The fruit you should not overlook is also jack fruit, which is similar to durian β the worst smellier fruit in the whole world. Luckily jack fruit does not smell bad and is in fact delicious. It grows on a tree and can weigh up to 60 kilos. When it is not ripe, it is also used to make curry.
Sri Lanka is perfect also for everyone who likes seafood; after all we are on an island. Grab yourself a tuna steak or a grilled local fish, which you will be dreaming about, when coming home. That is not only because of the low price, but also because of its taste.
We are big fans of dairy products and if you are too, do not forget to buy curd in one of many Sri Lankan markets. Curd is yoghurt, made out of buffalo milk, which has a distingue taste and smell, but adding sugar, honey or pieces of fruit, makes it so much better.
Exotic in taste, looks and colors β this is food in Sri Lanka, which makes the whole travel around the country extremely tasty! How to eat safely on your travels, read more in the travel tips here.

Sri lanka is a really nice place to travel, as it is beautiful and very diverse. Sri Lanka is also perfect if you don’t have a lot of time to spend traveling around as it is pretty small and can be explored even if you have only 10 or 14 days available. Not to mention the food – yummy! π
