We always keep coming back to Umag and with that to NW Istria in Croatia. Sometimes we feel that NW Istria is our second home. But no matter how many times we have been there, we always manage to find something new, something interesting and something inspiring.
It is really fascinating to observe a destination and its development and NW Istria has come far during recent years. NW Istria has not only raised its touristic activities and offers, it has also been becoming one of important culinary destinations.
The culinary festival »Sole Fish Days« was the main reason, why we have visited Umag and NW Istria this past weekend.
The Sole Fish Days are traditionally on the agenda from the middle of October until the end of November, when it is its season. This delicious white fish can be represented on plates with lots of different styles and options and you will find the best ones in 22 restaurants, which are part of the Sole Fish Days festival. We have visited the restaurant Igor in a small village Kaštel, near Slovenian-Croatian border, which we have never been too before. (Coordinates: 188.8.131.52 / 013.39.16.0)
The restaurant Igor has a long tradition (35 years), offering good food, which is mainly based on sea-food and truffles. In fact, you can even treat yourself with a 9 course slow food menu, where the precious white truffles are the main ingredient.
We knew that the restaurant Igor is known for the sea-food, so we were expecting lots from the sole fish menu. Our taste buds were impressed with every course, which came to our table. Everything started with a rich flavored bruschetta with sole tartare, cherry tomatoes and olives. Delicious »pljukanci« pasta with sole in Istrian Malvasia wine sauce followed and before we ended up with a chocolate dessert, we indulged ourselves with sole fillet on a paper-baked potatoes and vegetables. Do we need to say more? If you are considering yourself to be a real foodie, you probably know, good food should be served with good wine too. We have decided for the white local Istrian Malvasia wine, which was a good match with the sole fish.
We believe you will be so thrilled about culinary delights in NW Istria, that you would definitely want to stay there more than a day. If you do that, NW Istria has lots of hotels for every budget. We stayed at four point’s hotel Sol Garden Istria, which is a nice option, especially if you like to have coastal walks or bike rides.
Don’t even forget to stroll around the Umag old town. It is a small place, but still charming to catch your attention. It is especially nice if you are visiting when the sun is shining and it is pleasantly warm to sit outside, smelling and feeling the sea breeze on your face, while you are relaxing by a good glass of local Istrian Malvasia wine… We, on the other hand, had rain and dark clouds, but still enjoyed the weekend get-away to the NW Istria to the fullest. And yes, we will definitely be back. 🙂
