We sometimes feel so blessed to live in Slovenia. This tiny and little known European country really has everything we could wish for. Slovenia is a great destination for all the active travelers, fond of nature and outdoor sports.
If you ever visit Slovenia and its mountain town Kranjska Gora (known also for skiing in winter time), make sure to do a half day trip to Belopeska Lakes in Italy (Italian call them Laghi di Fusine).
You can reach Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes by car, on foot or by bike – it is entirely up to you. But to be honest, the best possible way to visit the lakes is by bike, as the cycling path is set up in a beautiful countryside, surrounded by Alpine mountains.
The cycling path is made on a formal railroad, which continues to Italy (further 174 km) or even to Austria (further 90-120 km). So if you think cycling to Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes is just not enough, you can easily make the trip a bit longer. A nice stretch is also to Treviso town in Italy.
Even if you’re not in the best cycling shape, we have good news. The Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes are actually very close to Kranjska Gora. As soon as you cross over the Slovenian/Italian border, there are only few more kilometers (app. 4 km) to overcome. The last kilometer is a little steep, but believe us, it is well worth the effort. On the other hand, you can also walk up, if you see the road comes a bit to steep for you.
There are two lakes at Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes and it is hard to say which one is more beautiful, as both surely will take your breath away. The landscape there is just amazing – green water, lush forest and high Alpine mountains are the perfect scenery for hot summer days. It is so easy to relax here and forget about everyday problems. A breath of fresh air and you feel like new.
We are grateful to have these beautiful Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes so close to us, as we can visit them over and over. No matter how many places in the world we visit, we are always happy to return here and we are sure you would be too.
Wow, another fantastic trip. Loved the pictures too, such beautiful nature.
Hi uroš,
glad you enjoyed the blog post about Belopeska Lakes. 🙂 You know what they say – short but sweet and that trip was exactly like it. 🙂
Hi Nina
I’ve come across your blog after searching for cycle routes in Slovenia, as I’m trying to plan a cycle tour around Slovenia this coming August. I was in Slovenia in 2013, and loved it so much that I promised myself to return, this time on my bike (and taking my dad with me!). I had in mind to fly into Ljubljana, then cycle to Bled and Triglav -> Kranjska Gora and Fusine lakes -> Kobarid -> (haven’t figured out a way back to Ljubljana…)! Any advice on routes? Would be hugely appreciative of any thoughts at all, as I’m finding it harder than expected to plan the route!
Cheers,
Debbie
Hi Debbie,
So happy to read you like Slovenia and that you’re coming back. Congrats also for planning to explore it on your bike. 🙂
Kranjska Gora and Lake Fusine are close, so make sure to stop in between in Planica (where the famous ski-jumps are held in winter…it is quite a place to see). 🙂
Also, for Kobarid, you should take the road / mountain pass from Kranjska Gora over Vršič (amazing views). When descending you will be cycling along the beautiful Soča river…great for stops and if you’re brave enough to swim in the cold river.
Not sure how much time you have, but before reaching Ljubljana from Kobarid, you might want to stop at Goriška Brda – such a beautiful region with good wine, food and amazing views (check more here: https://www.nina-travels.com/things-to-do-in-goriska-brda-slovenia/). From there you could come back to Ljubljana and maybe do a stop at Karst region to enjoy the famous Slovenian prosciutto and again, some local Teran wine. 😉 https://www.nina-travels.com/things-to-do-in-slovenia-prosciutto-making-tour/
Maybe you can also do a stop at Postojna on your way to Ljubljana and visit the Postojna cave: https://www.nina-travels.com/postojna-cave-best-wonders-of-europe/
Oh and another nice stop is also Radovljica (on the way from Ljubljana to Bled): https://www.nina-travels.com/ginger-bread-museum-radovljica-slovenia/
I hope I helped a bit. If you need some more info, you know where to find me. 😉
Cheers, Nina
Thanks so much Nina, that’s really helpful for my planning! Can’t wait already 🙂
Cheers,
Debbie
