If you would like to do a cycle trip when traveling in Slovenia, do a trip to Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes in Italy.

If you ever visit Slovenia and its mountain town Kranjska Gora (known also for skiing in winter time), make sure to do a half day trip to Belopeska Lakes in Italy (Italian call them Laghi di Fusine).

Cycling path from Kranjska Gora to Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes in Italy are well marked

You can reach Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes by car, on foot or by bike – it is entirely up to you. But to be honest, the best possible way to visit the lakes is by bike, as the cycling path is set up in a beautiful countryside, surrounded by Alpine mountains.

Reaching the Belopeska Lakes (Fusine Lakes) is a bit challenging due to a steep hill at the end, but is well worth the effort

The cycling path is made on a formal railroad, which continues to Italy (further 174 km) or even to Austria (further 90-120 km). So if you think cycling to Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes is just not enough, you can easily make the trip a bit longer. A nice stretch is also to Treviso town in Italy.

Beautiful Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes (cycling in Slovenia / Italy)

Even if you’re not in the best cycling shape, we have good news. The Belopeska Lakes / Fusine Lakes are actually very close to Kranjska Gora. As soon as you cross over the Slovenian/Italian border, there are only few more kilometers (app. 4 km) to overcome. The last kilometer is a little steep, but believe us, it is well worth the effort. On the other hand, you can also walk up, if you see the road comes a bit to steep for you.

    Hi Nina
I’ve come across your blog after searching for cycle routes in Slovenia, as I’m trying to plan a cycle tour around Slovenia this coming August. I was in Slovenia in 2013, and loved it so much that I promised myself to return, this time on my bike (and taking my dad with me!). I had in mind to fly into Ljubljana, then cycle to Bled and Triglav -> Kranjska Gora and Fusine lakes -> Kobarid -> (haven’t figured out a way back to Ljubljana…)! Any advice on routes? Would be hugely appreciative of any thoughts at all, as I’m finding it harder than expected to plan the route!
    Cheers,
    Debbie
